  1. I am sorry, but somehow I am unable to think it so horrible that Sweden allows Finnish soldiers to act according to Finnish laws on Swedish soil (IF the necessity should ever arise …). Both Sweden and Finland are after all civilized countries with pretty Scandinavian-style laws, so that it should not be any catastrophic difference if in an emergency Finnish soldiers would go by Finnish laws, whereas it would be quite a demand if Finnish soldiers were expected to learn, in addition to the Finnish rules, still the Swedish ones. That Sweden is at the moment short of soldiers is a situation which we also know from Germany: a bourgeois government was abolishing the draft (presumably in hope of getting a more professional army) and noticed too late that this way there are too few candidates coming into contact with military activities (by that, with the possibility to perhaps like the military sufficiently well to make it a profession). But now, the situation being what it is, one offers Finland the possibility to use also Swedish areas for defence purposes. The good thing which I see in this is that it could be the beginning of a closer military cooperation in at least the northern half of Scandinavia, offering Finland (especially once it should have bought the Swedish Gripen fighters) the possibility to use Swedish airfields, ground crews and stores of spare parts, perhaps also leading up to a joint, more reasonable and diplomatic policy towards Russia (especially when comparing to the policies which might result from joining NATO). It might also reduce political pressures to buy the products of the US Military-Industrial Complex (which, in the interest of the whole globe, anyway should be boyotted/starved instead of being encouraged, as it is the result of policies which, considering war as just a good market, invest astronomically in the production of weapons, absorbing huge resources which could be used for MUCH better purposes).

    • Historically, Finnish-Swedish co-operation in the north has been a not so secret military fact since just after ww II. The link to NATO, however, was published by Finnish and Swedish journalists rather later, beginning in the 1980’s. Seeing especially Sweden’s traditional attitude towards Russia, there is hardly any diplomacy to be expected in that policy.
