  1. Mnnnjaaa … , on the one hand it is of course really so that those with money like it very much that the police is eager to do them favours and to defend them against any tendencies which might change things. On the other hand there is the question whether, and how far, this is really just a question of money and corruption.
In 1968 and a few years after, we were also (and certainly not without reason) fighting against authoritarian patterns in general (in university, society, education …), and these happen in the heads. Authoritarian behaviour starts from the assumption that there HAS TO BE a group of BETTER people in a society, who then also should be in power and also should be defended against any attempts to take the power from them. In addition, it suggests that it is morally allowed, even good and morally satisfying, to mistreat anybody who shows tendencies of not agreeing with those in power. Which results in, e.g., police cruelty.
These authoritarian behaviour patterns belong to natural primate behaviour, but still one can carefully cultivate them, OR NOT. Christianity, especially Catholicism, has traditionally been taking great care to cultivate these patterns. It is the very basis of their power. And I think that Islam is none better in this.
The resulting societies do not provide even to the ruling classes as good service as more equal societies tend to provide to their citizens. But even the ruling classes do not realize this, and then it is of course morally so very much more satisfying to experience from the behaviour of others, e.g. the police, that one really seems to be a member of a BETTER category of people. And against such will really only some type of fight help. Gandhi may provide some good advice in this context …

  2. The point that in very unequal societies the service is even for those of the upper class worse than in less unequal societies I took from the book ”The Spirit Level – Why Equality is Better for Everybody” (by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett; Penguin paperbacks), which reports masses of statistics (and which I recommend most warmly).
Psychologically, I suspect something like the following mechanism: Medics tend to count themselves as belonging to the ”better” classes, with the frequent consequence that they do not really take all possible care when treating those ”less important” patients from the lower classes; with the consequence that they easily neglect the upkeep and development of their professional skills (after all, in their daily practice they have VERY mostly to do with those less important patients) – which results then in less than perfect treatment even then if they suddenly have to do with members of the ”important classes”. – This is not just based on theoretical deduction; in fact I have been going to school with people who were developing this way.
