Regards from the NATO Option
Today (12.01) Hbl reported that in Sweden a discussion about a possible NATO option (for Sweden) has made its appearance in political circles, and according to a recent poll it also seems that about as many people support joining NATO as there are against it. It was shocking me more than the invasion of the Capitol in Washington … .
That the Americans are falling for Trump is NOT so much of a surprise to me. After all, still 1998 there were 44 % among the adult Americans (and even 31 % among those who had gone through college) who fully believed in the creation report of the Bible, plus another 39 % who agreed that humans had developed over millions of years from animal ancestors, but at the same time believed that God had steered and supervised this evolution. Those who agreed with the view of biological science were about 10 %. In addition, a study friend of mine (a biologist, same as myself) was telling me very recently that a friend of his had (not very long time ago) to spend some longish time in the US Midwest, so that his wife (who was with him, also her a biologist by training) thought it good to look for work. She was offered a job as a teacher, but had to sign an injunction that she agreed not even to mention the term “evolution” … . Thus, we notice that the US school system is mass producing people who are taught to be at least deeply suspicious of science. And if they, as voters, have to choose between some environmentalists who, on the basis of science, demand more climate action, and, on the other side, a Donald Trump who often displays his contempt for science and anyway declares the climate crisis a hoax, it is rather easy to guess in whom those products of the US school system will believe. And as those people will not either die from their beliefs, we can expect them to be an important factor in the policies of the USA for still a long time to come.
That, though, the Swedish voters gradually begin to tend towards NATO IS some riddle to me: Just NOW, after Trump has for four years been demonstrating just WHAT types of person can become president in the USA (in addition to which I was just pointing out that there is definitely a possibility that somebody like him can also soon again become president), and in a situation where Russia is obviously rather weak in terms of conventional armament (so that there is hardly a danger of getting invaded by Russia) while China is (and will remain) far away, Swedish voters begin to think it a not so bad idea to join NATO (with all the political influence the USA will get by that) … . Well, I do not really understand it, but if somebody who is (e.g.) familiar with the Swedish media would feel able to explain it to me, I should be grateful if s/he could do it.
